SMF has a built in option for this, take a look on the admin panel for it

Admin -> Edit Features and Options -> Track daily hits (must have stats enabled)
This will show hits on your [More Stats] page.

Is there something that will tell me how the users got to my forum, where they were referred from?

hmm..I think you misunderstood. I don't want to create profile fields 

I want some osrt of script that tells me where my forum viewers came from..

But wouldn't that pretty much be stored in the profile fields? You can have the registration tempate post the data too. Maybe I'll give this a shot as a mod *shrugs*
