I'm trying to install SMF on my machine here, I go to install.php and press enter, the page tries to load but nothing happens, after about 10-15seconds I get a Windows error that Apache.exe stopped responding. There is nothing in the error log on Apache about this. Has anyone experienced this before? What can I do about it?

I'm running Apache/1.3.26 (Win32) PHP/5.1.2 on Windows XP SP2. MySQL 4.1.7

Never experienced anything like this before.

Most likely you have a problem with W A M P installation/configuration.

It's not possible for SMF scripts for crash Apache/PHP.

If you have problems getting WAMP to work, try wampserver: http://www.wampserver.com/en/.

I've had this server running for over 5 years now, upgraded it a few months ago. With out any problems, this is my test server, running three different versions of phpbb on it, a joomla website, 10-20 other test websites that using php/mysql on it. It has never crashed like this during these 5 years. So it's nothing wrong with the configuration.

And I didn't believe it when apache.exe crashed when I'm trying to install it either, but something must be wrong since I've never had any other problems.

Wanted to test SMF since it seems to integrate with Joomla very nicely, I've always been running phpBB earlier.

Due to the way Apache works if PHP has a problem or crashes it can sometimes cause Apache to crash too.

PHP will normally only crash if it has a bug or if it was compiled incorrectly. It is possible that it has never crashed before because SMF uses a line of code that is very different from anything in phpbb or joomla.

I'd suggest you upgrade to the latest release of PHP and the latest release of apache (either the latest in the 1.3 series or the 2.x series)
