Would a backup of the table restore my modules and layout of the template when changed or just the content of the forums?

I think you can do  a hole backup try it on a backup server

just the content and things like the forum structore. I think.

It depends which type of hosting your on.

On shared hosts or where the database isnt held on the same server, you'll need to backup the db and the files separately.

If your on vps/dedicated then you can usually backup up the whole server as one. although its recommended to just have backups of the database and files.
