Actually I've switched from IPB for not being able to finance the renewal.
This is why I was curious about knowing if SMF will always be free or not.

SMF will always as such be free (hopefully). However, that doesn't mean that you can't get extra benefits by donating (and thereby becoming a charter member)

Trust me it will. For example IPB charged for free software at version 1.3. SMF always has a forum and for charter members -- Support tickets. There are many things that show SMF will be free. Charter membership is like donating to SMF for what a great software it is.
