Can membergroups be made visible to everyone like phpBB? Other questions also.

Hi,

I was thinking of using SMF to convert one of my phpBB 2.0.22 boards which deal with very sensitive psychological issues (Depression, Sexual Abuse and other traumas) which I created for a local support group.

Some of the board sections are presently available to "chosen" members after moderator's approval to keep "lurkers" out. phpBB deals with this quite easily by creating a "usergroup" which shows in a drop-down box in the header. Permissions to access can be set to various settings and the one we use is "apply to join group" for the group moderator to approve or deny admission. Can this be replicated in SMF?

I created a test membergroup but can't figure out how to set the options for who has access to it or not.

Also, if I were to use SMF for this forum, I need to "minimize" member info and options, some of the options can be turned off in the ACP and some have to be commented out in various templates. One of my concerns is to set the "public email address" which I'll comment out but what do I need to change in mysql for this field to default to "no" (unchecked)?

Thanks,
Gene

Hmm, where is everybody?  ;)

OK, played around with membergroups and permissions, can I assume that in order to see a particular board, you have to be a member of the group?

Isn't there a way for everyone to see that this board section exists but can't access it unless they're part of the group?

Cheers,
Gene
