To be on the safe side does anyone know the best way to back up both the Forum and the Database? Is there a particular format the database should be backed up as for ease of restoration?

If you are using cPanel, there is a Backup feature in there. Just click on it and choose to download the full backup. It should backup both your forum files and your database.

For your regular backup purposes, you should only backup your database. I usually recommend using phpMyAdmin to do this.
