Adding a field to a Post

I want to do something fairly simple:

Add an additional field while posting.  I have coding experience but am fairly new to php.  Any guidance would be helpful. 

So far I figure I need to add a field to the posts database and the SQL statement to update, but can't figure out the visual form part.
