How do I grant myself admin status again?

The main problem is I never did the setup initially. Another admin set up the forum 2 years ago and was very secretive about how things were done.

in your phpmyadmin, go to smf_members
find your userID/username

UPDATE `smf_members` SET `ID_GROUP`=1 WHERE `ID_MEMBER`=<yourUserID>

i.e. to change user#1 into the admin group,
UPDATE `smf_members` SET `ID_GROUP`=1 WHERE `ID_MEMBER`=1
