I get various errors when trying to install mods - here is one of them:

2: fopen(/home/threesix/public_html/smf/index.php) [<a href='function.fopen'>function.fopen</a>]: failed to open stream: Permission denied
File: /home/threesix/public_html/smf/Sources/Subs-Package.php
Line: 1901

****** has been happening since i tried and failed to install the update to 1.1.6 on my server and it failed - I am thinking it may have messed my site up now :(

Any ideas what is going on?

change your whole sites Chmod to 777. That will solve the problem.

See: How do I chmod? / what is chmod?

If that doesn't fix it then it may be that your host is restricting the fopen() function in which case you'll need to contact them about it.
