No, if you mess up your files then you wont have a forum to get into. Your database holds members, posts, pms, all that stuff. The files make sure it displays correctly and call the stuff from the database. You need to back up both, mostly the files when installing mods unless they edit the database.

Why?
If you backup all of your files (the entire directory) to your pc then you can do what ever, if you mess up just re-upload the files you messed up on. It's simple.

Same as with all other forum software.

i just checked the backup ETA and it was 3 hours to back them up

It should not take that long, mine does not even take 10 minutes and I have heaps of my own files in there....
