This is a phpbb Usenet post featching and posting script. http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=121946&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

This would be a really nice addon for SMF. For now looks like on of my new sites will force me to go back to the dark side and use phpbb  :(

Hi all,

I too would love to see SMF have the ability to show usenet newsgroups within my forum.
Most other forums (I won't name them!) seem to be able to offer this!!!

Is it not about time that SMF did???

Search the forum (If you can  :( ), there are many asking for this.

Any takers?

Dave

Looks like unfortunately we will be moving to VBull.

Everyone says it is too hard.

Thanks

I need this too.  Please consider adding it in the future.

I have a new site that I would like to steal er, I mean show ;) good content from good relevent usenet groups. I really like SMF and I'll keep it for my other site but I guess I get to learn a new forum system, oh joy!

I guess it is down to vBulletin and phpBB, any preferences?

It seems strange to me that you would change forum software because one can't display a newsgroup, especially when they are completely different things, and especially if you're wanting to steal content that isn't even yours.
SMF doesn't integrate with my bank, but that doesn't mean I'd change to something else... SMF does forums well, if you want newsgroups use newsgroups software.

Thanks for the reply.

I do not want to "steal" posts, but give the ability to my members to actively participate in another option of using my forum to see and reply to newsgroups.

Many of my members have requested it. It also gives them one place to visit. It will also add another "hook" for them to visit more!

I have changed to VBull for one of my sites - though still testing it works very well. The other sites will stay with SMF for the time being to see how it all works out.

I have searched the forums here, and there are loads and loads of interest in this feature. I would still love to see this added here at SMF

You can write a mod for it. Noone's saying you can't do that. Just don't expect the Team to do a large ammount of work for a minority of forum users.

I was kidding about "stealing" posts.  Basically I have a website that I want to make more useful for folks. There are a few newsgroups that would be of real interest to my website visitors.  They are good quality and popular. Now I can (and will) create my own forum space but with few visitors to date it will be a fairly quite forum, however if one of the "boards" is this newsgroup then there will be much more activity.

For an example checkout hxxp:www.homeimprovementbanter.com/ [nonactive]

When you can put up a forum that has 100,000+ posts then you've got a really useful place for folks to visit! Not to mention that the forum system is much more easier to navigate/use/search than my newsgroup reader (just using mozilla thunderbird).

I'm not expecting SMF to do this anytime soon, I just wanted to add my vote so that you get some more indication of how many folks are looking for this feature.  In my day job I'm a software product manager, so I know what it's like to juggle feature requests.  I won't leave SMF for my "day job" forum but I truely do need the newsgroup integration so for that I'll use a different system (the two forums are not with the same businesses).

I appreciate that SMF is open source but I don't have the time/talent to make this mod.  Maybe somebody else out there is interested???

I totally agree with you eldacar!

I am in the same boat!

Many of my users and visitors do not know how to use NNTP / Usenet or how to find the groups. Many users do not have an ISP who allows port 119 open to read newsgroups. Certainly it is not easy for some to use. It does add more contents to your forums and allows the members to interact with wider audience. I find that loads of new users signing up to use this feature.

Hopefully some kind wizard will be able to put a mod together - many people would want this :)
Come on..
Thanks,
Dave

Hey SMFers...

I'm pleased to annouce that my NNTP Syndicate mod has been approved, and is ready for download.  It currently only posts SMF topics to Newsgroup(s), but I may add the reverse in the future (Newsgroup -> SMF).

Enjoy!
