I havent had a chance to try it yet as I have been out of town. I am going to try it tomorrow night when there is only a few people online.

When did you start noticing this issue?

Not sure what else you have tried already, but try to truncate the online users table to see if it helps. This will kick everyone off, so use it wisely...preferably when there is little to no members online. Worse thing is that they need to login again ;)

Go into phpMyAdmin and click on your database. Then click on the SQL tab and copy paste the following code and run it:

TRUNCATE smf_sessions;
TRUNCATE smf_log_online;

thanks for the help. This issue has been going on for as long as I can remember (prety much the entire time I have had the forum which has been about 8 months now). I will try this at a time when its the most convenient (there arent many members online), and let you know how it goes.

Ok, I just ran this query. Here are the results:

TRUNCATE smf_sessions;# MySQL returned an empty result set (i.e. zero rows).
TRUNCATE smf_log_online;# MySQL returned an empty result set (i.e. zero rows).

I will wait about 24 hours and let you know if it helped any.

update: unfortunately its still happening. I do have a question though: Should the query have returned empty results"?

For the backup you restored, is that using the same SMF version that you have now?

Also, is this the default theme you are using? If not, see if it happens for the default theme also.

When I had to restore from a backup, the backup and what I was currently using to restore it on at that time were both 1.1.4. I'm using 1.1.5 now - I upgraded when it came out.

It happens no matter what theme I use. I am beginning to think its TP that is causing the issues. I have had TP almost since day 1. Not sure what part of TP would actually affect people logging in, but I cant think of anything else it can be.

One of my staff started having the password issue using IE 7 the other day (normally she uses FF). I had her log out of the forum, delete her bookmark that she was using to access the site, and then log back in and she isnt having the problem anymore, "however", I have been using IE 7 and the same bookmark for 4 months and I have never had the password issue. I thought initially, it might be people accessing the site using "www" which isnt part of my site url. THen I thought it might be a cookie problem - but if their not logged in, their not using a cookie to access the site so thats not it.

Heck, I dont know anymore...lol. Ive racked my brain on this till I am brain fried.

can you link to the boards in question?  what currently are your session settings in admin > server settings > feature configuration (since they may have changed)

Its not a specific board issue, its a login issue. Here are my settings. I have already tried changing these around and it still happens. I attached the error that I get several times a day

Enable local storage of cookies CHECKED
Use subdomain independent cookies UNCHECKED
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Optimize tables every how many days? 7
Maximum users online when optimizing 0
(0 for no max.)
Automatically fix broken tables   CHECKED
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Enable compressed output   CHECKED
Use database driven sessions  CHECKED
Allow browsers to go back to cached pages CHECKED
Seconds before an unused session timeout   2880

metallica48423

try unchecking database driven sessions.

When i say board, i mean, a link to the forum itself :)

and an odd idea -- if you change your password does it still do it?

Tried unchecking that setting and got this:

"Session verification failed. Please try logging out and back in again, and then try again"

I couldnt click on anything after that, I had to completely log out of the forum and then back in to get it to load again. Hopefully it wont cause anyone else any issues while its unchecked. I will keep an eye on it for a day or so and see if it makes any difference.

As for me changing my password, I have never gotten the password incorrect errors. I have about 50 other members a day that do tho.

That will happen from making the session change.  I should have noted that.   Most likely everyone will have to log back in which is technically necessary to test this anyhow.

You can force a logout however by changing the cookie name.

well that didnt seem to fix it either :(. I am still getting a bunch of password incorrect errors in my log. Its getting so bad that I have to have one of my staff do nothing but keep an eye on everyones IP because people are now starting to create duplicate accounts after they make 3 attempts to login and get the password incorrect error every single time.

Ive done everything from have folks clean out their temp files/cookies, delete their bookmark and then manually come back to the site and login (which works for about 24 hours for them then they start getting errors again) to making every known change to the server settings page. I just dont understand why only some of the members are having the problem. You would think if its an SMF cookie issue or something wrong with one of the SMF files, everyone would be seeing it, and as I already stated, I have never gotten this error "myself".

Sheesh.. my poor brain is smoking from all the thinking I have tried to do on this..lol.

which mods DO you have installed?

Do these members have any specific things in common with each other in terms of their accounts?

Not really. Some are staff (in different membergroups), most are in the 1st reg membergroup.

Have you tried replacing all the forum files with fresh versions of the files (except Settings.php of course), testing, and then reinstalling mods?

while we could uninstall mods one by one to see if one of them is causing this issue, I think it would be faster just to remove them all at once... that is, unless you also have custom coding :)

geez.. reinstall all these? Do you know what a "huge headache" it was to get them all on there and have them work with both my custom themes?  lol. It took me almost 3 months to get them all working on just 1 of those themes because of all the manual edits I had to do.

Man, that would delete all the tags we have spent months putting on topics, everyones thank you totals would be gone, all the member awards would be gone

I may just have to live with the password incorrect error  :'(

metallica48423

why would they be gone?  Most mods install/uninstall without deleting their data.

They do?

I have never had to manually remove a table or any other files from the DB after uninstalling a mod - they are always automatically deleted upon uninstallation. The only thing I have ever had to do is just manually edit the customs themes files and remove the relevant codes.

metallica48423

if in doubt, back it up first -- however, overwriting the files does not 'uninstall' the mods.  It simply removes their code references.

This is the route I suggest:

1.) Put the forum in maintenance mode
2.) Take a file backup and a full database backup
3.) download the large upgrade package from our downloads page
4.) Unzip it onto your computer
5.) Delete upgrade.php and all of the .sql files.
6.) Upload what's left over top of your current files.
7.) Test the login.
8.) Start reinstalling mods

If it works, it shouldd first fix the issue and you should be able to reinstall mods without data loss -- however in the case of that -- we have backups (assuming you take them).`
