Is there any way to fix this. Some of my members are receiving it.

Database Error: MYSQL Server Has Gone Away File:home/lonesta5/public-html/sources/security.php

Thanks for any help.

This is caused by two settings in MySQL / my.ini.

wait_timeout
connect_timeout

Both measured in seconds.

Basically they are set too low, meaning that MySQL is dropping the connection part way through loading the page.
And when SMF tries to query the database again its getting the message MySQL has gone away.

You'll need to contact you host and ask them to increase both of the settings.

This error usually occurs on very cheap shared hosts where the host try to maximize performance, but to the detriment of usability.  If the host is unable or unwilling to increase the values and if all else fails, look for a new host.

I've been getting the same error and it's preventing me from a complete backup. Though there hasn't been any mention from members of problems.

Is there a setting that I can change?

Many Thanks!

I have read this thread as well as some others that appear to be having the same problem as I am experiencing.

I contacted my web host provider (he is a very good friend of mine) so I informed him of what was suggested as the cause of the problem.

He went into his sql settings and we tested, he increased from 20 to 60 and still I recieved the same error. I went to a different box he manages and could access the database with the original settings of 20.

What I have noticed is that when I could access my forums my ISP had me on a 12.x.x.x IP range, after they switched me to 173.x.x.x is when I have been experienciing this problem.

Is there any rational between my ISP changing my IP and I can no longer access smf database?

/dazed and confused.

I know new IP range are released from time to time and some programs have issue with new IP ranges that they don't know of.  So it might be it, but I can't recall how to test if a new IP range is related to 173.x.x.x.

As for lonestarrider, do you have many bans?  Do you have hostname lookup enabled?
