hi
I installed SMF in /forum folder
I changed the permission of  forum folder to 770 and all files in it to 775 to disallow others to access settings.php

Then when I want to access forum by http://www.my_website.org/forum , I recieve this error :

You don't have permission to access /forum/index.php on this server.

Can anyone help ?

Nathaniel

Try chmoding them to 0777. If that doesn't work, then you should contact your host and ask them to make sure that its writeable and viewable.

You could also try removing the '.htaccess' file from that folder.

Why Chmodding to 777 is NOT a risk. :D
Thanks for your answer

I read it before I do this.
It's not a security risk because the parent directory has 770 permission.
but now no one can access the forum !

If I set the parent directory to 775, then settings.php as accessible to all!

What should I do?

Cant you just change something like settings.php to 755 while chmodding the rest of the files?

Also when you chmod settings.php to 777 it still shouldn't display. It should only show a white page.

Regards,

oh ,yes
a white screen :-)

Then, there is no problem
Thanks a lot

Then Should I change the permission of the main directory to 775 ?

I understand your caution but I have seldom seem issues with permissions set this way. Some links have been thrown your way regarding permissions and security risks etc.

Having odd permissions is only liable to create problems running your forum and attempting to use the package manager.
