Graceful maintenance mode

Whenever I put my site into maintenance mode - I am aware that there are several posts being typed up.

what would be nice, is a way to turn on maintenance mode for everyone who isnt posting - and those that are typing posts can finish before the site shuts them out.

Perhaps a global advance warning in a private message would do?

I don't think that will work... too many people don't pay attention to their PMs except when they first log on or after they post.

Where possible, we try to tell our members with a big old notice in the News section in advance, with a time of "shut-down."

I think the only way tell if someone is posting is by seeing which page he is on (like the Who's online) ..
so what will happen if someone left his browser open while in posting page and went to sleep?! you will only let the maintaince mode suspended for nothing
or maybe I am wrong
