Smiley rework?

 I never messed with the smilies much until today. One thing I dont like is that you have to have the smilies in all sets or atleast a black file with the same name as those in other sets. Would it be possible to utilize sets in a different way? What I was trying to do was a different sets today for the upcoming football season (not soccer  ) I wanted to have different smiley sets for college and pro but found out I'd have to have the pictures in all the sets,  which to me defeats the purpose of sets. ( I know i could name the eagles picture :-) but that seems odd way of doing it to me.

Would it be possible instead to make the sets available to all but as a popup. So instead of the [more] perhaps the list of smiley sets where you then can pick which set comes up in the pop-up. That way they could be in seperate folders and not have to rename all those smilies in the folders.
I know you can put them all in a popup but then the popup gets hugh once you get a lot of sets. In the admin section you could pick which sets would be available to your members.

Good idea? Understand my idea? Come on [Unknown] I know you can do it

I really hate the way smilies are imported into SMF.

I second the motion... maybe the SMF team will give us a better looking smiley sets in the final 1.0 release so we don´t have to change it

I agree that we do need better-looking smileys for 1.0 final. I've been trying to convince them to release the ones used here, but I doubt it's gonna happen ([Unknown] - I know what you've said. I just don't agree with it ).

As for needing the same smiley image name for each set, the reason it's done this way is because it stores just the smiley code, description and image name in the database - not the name(s) of the smiley set(s) the image is being used with...

I would also like to see an additional smiley option - the "smiley box" like the old "Add More Smilies" mod for YaBB SE had. I haven't switched my board to SMF yet (still waiting on the next version of LSP), and I have over 100 smilies on my board (I went nuts ), and that little dropdown list/smiley box thing is a great feature. I don't want to have a popup window with hundreds of smileys in it and I don't want to have 100+ smileys scattered in the post box either. There is plenty of room off to the left of the post box for this sort of thing and I would love to have it in SMF. If it doesn't make it to SMF by the time I switch, I'll have to re-make it myself and I don't wanna do that.

I'm customizing the one that was made for your board. The code for the one in the original YaBB SE mod is different.

and which do you really think is better?

On my SE board, the popup window had so many smilies in it that when you clicked one you would have to wait ages for it to enter the code into the post.  It was faster to just do a copy/paste and get on with it.

I never thought about puting blank images in folders so not all smileys show up all smiley sets.  Does this put a lot of blank space where the smiles should go?
