No domain is needed. A webhost is needed though. I would suggest freehostia if you want one for free.

You have a list of free hostings that support SMF in this forum's subboard. Also you can find other free hosts which will then give you subdomain, and after you upload files and install you're ready to go.

Feel free to look at the Hosts and Hosting board for a webhost. You will need a webhost to host your SMF files and database. You will need to get a domain name also. Make sure your webhost meets the minimum requirements as posted in the link earlier.
