I have SMF version 1.5 and I am wanting to upgrade to 1.6.

I went to Forum Maintenance to get back up files and when clicked on download a window came up telling me:

QuoteFile Type: GZIP compressed archive file

File Extension: .gzip

Description: GZip files contain one or more files that have been compressed and packaged into an archive file.

Software or information available at:
Aladdin Systems Stuffit for Windows
WinAce
WinImp
WinZip

You may search the following Web site for related software and information:

Windows Live Search
You may purchase or download software related to this file type from the following Web site:

Windows Marketplace

What does this mean?

Also when I uncheck compress with gzip it says:

QuoteFile Type: Unknown

Description: Windows does not recognize this file type.

Gzip is a file format. For windows I suggest getting winrar to handle those types of files.
You can get it from

I already have 7-Zip so will that work?

vbgamer45

It should if you associate that filetype with 7zip

I was finally able to upload something and I want to know if this is the backup.

It is "mydomain_forum-data_2008-10-23.sql[3].gz\". Is this the backup?

vbgamer45

Looks like it as long as all the table structure is there and it complete it is good to go.

Something went wrong with my forum so I had to import the backup and when I did it said there was an error with the attachment table.

Will it always have this error?

Are you trying to import or export your forum database now? If you have problems with the SMF backup, I highly recommend using the backup feature from your webhost instead or from phpMyAdmin. I never had problems restoring from either of those backups.

What error is it giving you exactly when you did the import?
