More posibilitys for Images/Icons in Templates

Hey,
I started to write own Styles/Templates for that Board and figured out that I cannot change all the Icons and the format of them.
As I want to include Icons from the Oxygen project witch have the png-format I see that some icon's are in the sourcecode and not in the code of the templates.
I found it's wrong to leave things like that in the SourceCode. It may take problems with packages or something else if I change the code - or?
I thought about set the code fully in the templates or set up variables for all images and put them in a .php file in the specific theme folder. But the second idea may request to much space.
You may find a way around that problem - actually I am not so fit in PHP
