A news and current events portal for my forum

Hi Folks.

I'm looking to add a news/up coming events box or portal (is that what it's called?) to the top of my forum underneath the menu. www.sydneyindependentartists.com Can anyone tell me whether this is something one would modify in a theme via the admin panel of SMF (i'm using 1.1. or would I need to integrate with other software to achieve this? An example of what I'd like is the box titled comic in this forum- http://www.the-gooch.com/smf/index.php

Any ideas?

What you have shown in the example is a portal or portal like.  The only reason I say portal like is because I do not see the portal name at the bottom.  There are a few portals which are available for SMF such as Simple Portal, Tiny Portal & PortaMx (SMF 2.x only).  All of these portals are simple to use and integrate.  Hope this helps.

can anyone recommend a good tutorial for adding portals to SMF? I had a look at Simple Portal and Tiny Portal websites, but there isn't a good thorough tutorial for noobs..

You just install them like any other mod package. Use your package manager.
