Package to update smf 1.1.6 to 1.1.8

I'm trying to upgrade from 1.1.7 to 1.1.8 and getting that error as well:

"The package you are trying to download or install is either corrupt or not compatible with this version of SMF"

I upgraded from 1.1.6 to 1.1.7 this way in the past, as well as previous updates.  Why does it not work now?  Nothing has changed on my end.
I checked the Forum error log, and nothing there either.

Do I really have to do the manual patch/upgrade?

Some folks have had to do this manual edit before the package manager works in 1.1.7:

Once you have done that you may be able to click the link in the admin panel to update.

If you still have problems, then download the update from this link and apply it through the package manager as if it was a mod:
