?_This is a blanket question about the SMF 1.X version, overall_?

I have two forums, both 1.1.9.  They work beautifully, right now, they're pretty much flawless and the posters are as happy as clams.  (I don't know what that means.  *grin* )

The thing is, I've been fretting over the 2.X upgrade, always wanting things to be even better, but I did install it on a blank test site I have, yesterday and played around with it.  I'm not seeing enough changes to stop me from having difficulty believing that the risks of having them go through the botches and perhaps lost mods and games, etc. would be worth the upgrade.

This is my question:  Will SMF continue in the future to support the 1.X version of its forums or will they eventually be phased out completely?  I suppose I'm wanting to know this before the axe falls so that I can prepare myself for it and, as I said, my posters are deliriously happy with your 1.1.9 version.  I'd hate to mess that up.

Would you advise?

Thanks!

There are still upgrade patches to versions 1.0.x :P

It will take alot of time, more than one or two years probably, but eventually almost everyone will be using 2.0 and it will be more difficult to support something that you don't use anymore. In some time (again, years), it will be phased out like any other deprecated software ;)

In some time you too will upgrade :P new MODs and themes will not be backward compatible so you will feed the need :P

Ah......     *lays head on keyboard and gets in the fetal position*

Somehow, I knew you were going to say that.  *grin*

Well.....   can I just ask, margarett, what the most seamless way would be to gently shift my posters from one version to an entirely new one with minimal loss to their posts, profile info and threads?  I'm already suspecting that they will lose all their SMF Arcade scores, as that mod has been updated, as well, and my understanding is that any old version must be completely removed before upgrading.  (I've looked at some of their scores, some of them should be happy to lose them.  *laughing* )  The same thing with ZCommunity (blogging); I suppose, since it's been updated for 2.0 that we can expect to lose blogs and have to start all over?

I think, margarett, that what I'm really getting at is how to prepare my posters for what I feel will be a big change for a few days.  I'd like to let them know what issues they might expect as we're making the switch.

Thanks for your thoughts on this.

Those are really just my thoughts, nothing official from the team. Maybe I am mistaken :P

For those contents, I don't know, in fact, if their information is also converted just by using SMF's converter. Maybe the MOD authors can provide a conversion tool in case it's not (converted by SMF's converter).

But I honestly don't know how that works... I am still in 1.1.9 and I haven't touched 2.0 except this forum here :P

Well, it's nice to know that I can sleep a few nights before panicking, anyway, margarett.  *grin*

I guess I'll just wait until I'm forced to surrender 1.X (and I may ask for a blindfold and a last cigarette when that happens).

Thanks for the info!
