i keep getting this error message when trying to install smf 1.1.6 on my website:

"Cannot connect to the MySQL database server with the supplied data.

If you are not sure about what to type in, please contact your host.

Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)"

could it be from incorrect settings in my php.ini file?

this is what it currently is:

register_globals = off
allow_url_fopen = off

expose_php = Off
max_input_time = 60
variables_order = "EGPCS"
extension_dir = ./
upload_tmp_dir = /tmp
precision = 12
SMTP = relay-hosting.secureserver.net [nofollow]
url_rewriter.tags = "a=href,area=href,frame=src,input=src,form=,fieldset="

[Zend]
zend_extension=/usr/local/zo/ZendExtensionManager.so
zend_extension=/usr/local/zo/4_3/ZendOptimizer.so

any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

If you on shared hosting you will not have access to the config files needed to change it and fix the problem. You host will have to make the needed changes to the MySQL server to allow the connection.
PM at your own risk, some I answer, if they are interesting, some I ignore.
