How about a Google Voice Call Widget bbcode embed?

How would you use it? That would also assume that all your members (or at least a large number of members) had GV accounts.

I'm thinking in conjunction with the Custom Profile Field Mod, which has the choice to allow parsing of BBC.

If you're going to make it a profile field, a simpler solution would just be to make it a profile field - and not put it into bbcode at all (bearing in mind bbcode is still considered every post, every signature etc)

So what would you expect to see? Online/offline status? What would you expect the user to have to do to make it work?

On a mechanical level you want somewhere for the user to put their ID in, and if that is present, to display it like that.

It shouldn't be too hard to do.

Remaining questions: SMF 1 or 2 and is it free or paid? (Note I'm not saying I'm doing it - I'm just trying to establish for anyone who would, what would be needed and also bring it in line with the rules)

Actually, the entire object string would need to go in, as there may be other changeable options included besides the user ID info.

While a couple of my users thought it was a good idea, I don't think there's enough interest yet to justify a paid mod. GV is pretty new and still only available by invite, so the demand is not real high - yet.

Ah, if it's going to require more options then it's going to be even more complex

The options are generated by Google and are part of the widget object code that the GV user copies when he/she creates a new widget on the GV site. So the mod would need to allow the pasting and execution of the GV object code and format the space in the profile for the graphic to appear.

It's not as simple as that, unfortunately. There would have to be checks to ensure it wasn't arbitrary code being posted. So it's still a single box then, just bigger?

At least in interface terms that's not so bad. You'd still have to do a ton of sanity checking on it though to prevent malicious code being added.

I think more people need to investigate Google Voice to be honest.
