Well, remember that some of the content is pulled from the forum, such as the news area, which by definition isn't directly translatable (as it's forum threads)

I think of that would be the only thing that would be untraslatable

I don't have a problem with the home page being translated personally. Hopefully the Internationalizers can comment on this - as they'll be the ones who have to arrange translations being done.

Fustrate

I'd be a bit hesitant - after all, it's the face of Simple machines, so we'd need to make sure the translations are high quality, and not just from Babelfish or something. Additionally, there are tons of pages on the main site, so it would be a big task.

I think it would help in smf internationalization, you already have a solid translators group who, I think, will be willing to translate the main page to their native languages, about Babelfish and similar, the same thing happens with Language packs, you can't be 100% sure about the quality of the translation.

I was under the impression that this was something that was being worked on. Currently a lot of the site text is still hardcoded rather than abstracted to $txt strings.

I thought they were at least laying out plans for it to be translated. Even if it hasn't, I think it would be great for SMF to do this. Considering it is the first thing people see, and some people if they dont see the language they want the first time, most likely they will go some where else. So I think it should be done personally.

Internationalization and localization mean more than having a translated interface.

To be honest I think that the homepage should be the last page being "internationalized" here, and only after the docs will be completely translated.

Completly agree with this!

Yeah, you bring up a great point, the docs should be number 1 priority to be translated.

This isn't a problem I see a lot of good translators in the community, the same Translation Team that translate the Mod Site can do it

Translate the home page isn't a big task, there aren't a lot of strings, so it can be done in a little range of time

As Frustate said the homepage is the face of SMF so if we want internationalization our face ahould be the most important thing is our face, the first impression

It's not about the amount of strings we'd have to translate .... it's not even (only) about the quality of the translation work ... it's about how far & how deep the localization process would be implemented at the moment of having the homepage translated in various languages.

I'd go for the last impression, the one that is there to stay but maybe it's just me looking beyond appearances, looking for consistency and usability instead.   :)

Well, I think of the SMF Team can easily add a little localization script to automatically set the language to the visitor, I don't know why you see it as a bad idea it will be useful and easy to do, about the quality will be high just like the translation of the Mod Site

Gary

I think there were talks a while back about eventually moving the site to be translatable. I'm not sure what happened to that.

I'm pretty sure it is "being worked on". Meaning, it is something we have discussed and will happen eventually.
