Question on Paid Subscription

Ok, for a while now I had my forum as open.  So anyone could join, and once they activated their email,  they became a "regular" member.

I just added two paid membership options.   Problem I am having, when you sign up as a new user,  there is no mention of the paid memberships.  It just assigns you as a regular member.

You have to go into your profile, select actions, and then paid memberships to see them.  One Option is Basic Member, and the other is Full Member).   So I assume once they pay it will change their status from regular member to basic or full correct?

Is there an easier way?   Or is there a way to make someone choose a membership option before letting them join?

If so, how would I do this?
