Mambo-SMF Bridge install problems

Ok, at the risk of repeating something here. I've followed the install instructions for the bridge and everything to the letter 3 times. I've gotten SMF installed and integrated with Mambo. The SMF login module is what is giving me trouble.

If I publish the smf login module and logout from the Mambo administration, I get the SMF forum wrapped in Mambo. The new login form is visible as well. If I then login from here, everything works fine. I am logged into SMF and Mambo at the same time nicely. However, if I try to access another part of the site from the Mambo menu, I get a string of errors (see below)

Now...if I unpublish the smf login form, and republish the Mambo login form, and logout of the Mambo admin, I get SMF wrapped in Mambo as it should be. If I log out of Mambo through the form, I'm taken to the SMF index and I remain logged in there. From there I can login/out just fine in SMF, but Mambo is nowhere to be found.

If I go back to the Mambo home page the page displays normally.  If I login, I get the SMF forum wrapped in Mambo as it should be with me logged into both.  If I log out, I get the same thing as before...I get the SMF forum and am still logged in.

Now..if I go back and login to Mambo admin, remove the link in the menu to the forum, then log out of Mambo admin, I get the Mambo home page. When I then login to Mambo, it behaves normally.  Getting pretty frustrated here. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

this really isn't a FAQ...

it looks like your running in two separate databases?

Does your Mambo database user have access to your SMF database?

I'm using a single database for both, SMF and Mambo access it with the same user/pw, if that makes a diff although I don't think it would. SMF is supposed to be installed in a top level dir right? Such as hxxp:www.domain.com/forum [nonactive].

Did you put the code from the instructions into your Mambo template?

Yes, I followed the instructions exactly. I'd like to get it fixed, as my only alternative would be to keep SMF and Mambo separate.
