okay I'm converting from phpbb. I just started my first forum ever and it was using phpbb so I'm a forum newbie. anyway I wan't to converto to SMF and I don't care if I loose any info on the forum (there is only one post other than mine). would you recommend that I delete everything from php and do a clean install of SMF or do you recommend I do a convert?

It's all a matter of your choice.  If you have a lot of posts and members just convert.  You can find more help at Converters and Importers board.

This read me might help: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/readme_convert.html
If you will be  converting to 1.1 take a look here 1.1 Converters
download the phpbb converter here http://www.simplemachines.org/download.php?converters

I'd suggest you just delete everything and install SMF fresh if you don't care.  You have to install SMF either way, converting is just more work.

I pretty much don't have anything on the forum so I'm gonna try to do a clean install, thanks. on the FTP upload page I've deleted pretty much everything except the "cgi" and the "stats" files, should I delete those as well?

I have already downloaded and uploaded the "smf_1-0-5_install.zip" file the server

Erm... cgi and stats?  Those don't have much to do with SMF or phpBB, as far as I know.  You'd have to ask your host, but you probably want to keep them.
