Hi there,

I'm a first time user of SMF so apologies if I'm missing anything obvious. I've also read many similar topics in this forum looking for an answer but my situation seems a little different from most others.

I have installed SMF 1.1.12 and have it sharing users with my MODX website successfully using the SMF_Module for MODX.

Everything works fine as far as I can see except attachments. I've made no changes to the original settings but they just don't seem to be happening.

I can upload an attachment to a post no problem. The file is successfully saved in the attachments folder [and renamed] and I can see it there via FTP. However, the link to the attachment from the post in the forum does not work. Neither does opening the attachment via the Admin / Attachments & Avatars / Browse Files section.

Clicking on either link will take you to ...

hxxp://www.xxxx.org.uk/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=6.0;attach=8

.. which shows a browser-generated 404 error [ie not the SMF-generated one that you get if the folder is wrongly set in Admin].

my attachments folder [just the default one] is set to 777 at the moment.

Many thanks in advance for any suggestions and let me know if I can provide more info.

In Admin > Attachments And Avatars > Attachment Settings > Display image attachments as pictures under post > Do you have that box checked ?

You could also try setting the file permission to 755, as some hosts do not permit 777 permissions.

Hi there,

Thanks for taking a look.

That box is indeed checked .. the forum does attempt to display the attached picture at the bottom of the post but fails with a red X

Do you have the correct path to the directory in the input field on that page.

If you look in Admin > Server Settings, you will see the path to your sources directory, that would normally be the same path you need for your attachments directory, with the /sources changed to /attachments.

Hi again,

the folders are as they were set up initially ..

sources:

/home/wwww/xxxx/yyyy/zzzz/forum/Sources

and attachments:

/home/wwww/xxxx/yyyy/zzzz/forum/attachments

thanks,

Chris

Just a thought given that this is a new install.

Do you have php safe mode disabled, as SMF can have issues with it turned on.

Thanks again Paul_Pauline .. but php safe mode is not enabled.

Anyone got any further thoughts on this?

Totally flummoxed!

Sorry I cannot assist you, but you are not alone with this problem. I had exactly the same problem and I give up.

I dont know if the problem is a bug with smf version 1.1.12 or just something to do with changing the server and settings?

dejaya

Hi folks.

Does anyone else have any ideas about this? Again - even confirmation that the url of the attachment link [above] is correct would be a step in the right direction.

Many thanks once again,

Chris

phpinfo.php link for my attachment problem. Please note that my problem is with the old attachments not being visible on a server transfer, however new attachments work fine.

How did you transfer them? Please check the following link. Could this be your problem?

Important Notice: Do you use Filezilla?  Avatars and Attachments lost?

If at first you don't succeed, use a bigger hammer. If that fails, read the manual.

I did use filezilla for the initial transfer, however I was informed that this may be causing the problem. I deleted the attachment folder and uploaded a fresh copy using wsftp in the binary mode, unfortunately it did not cure the problem,

Keep in mind that dejaya is the topic starter and my comments were directed there.  It's tough to try and solve issues for two members in the same topic. :)

Hi Jim .. any ideas? phpinfo file above ^

Cheers

The phpinfo sheet looks fine however you do have some functions disallowed that I haven't seen disallowed before.  If attachments have never worked, that makes me think there is a setup issue that we may need to look at.  If you want to PM me a temporary admin account I would be glad to make sure things are set correctly.
