All mods and themes will need to be reinstalled. Make sure that your mods and themes are also supported with SMF 2.0 RC3 before you provide.

As long as you take a FULL backup, including the database, you can convert.

Then, if you find that you prefer v1.1.11, like I did, you can simply restore the backup.

You MUST save the database, though, or there's no way back to v1.1.11.

QuoteIt tends to break rather easily when I'm using mods and whatnot, and I'm paranoid about breaking my forum. xD

That's why we use backups. ;) If you just happened to break your forum in the upgrade, you can just restore the backup, as previously stated.  ;D

I would say to give it a try, and like the above states, just make a full backup of your forum before attempting it. :)

Quotesooner or later you have to update

Actually, no you don't. I believe there are still some forums with YaBB or SMF 1.0 beta 1. ;)

K@'s advice is something you should remember.  Backup everything before attempting an upgrade, always!

Take a look at the Mod Site to see if the mods you use are available for 2.0RC3.  Do the same for any custom themes.

Give it a try!

I'd backup from CPanel>Files>Backups.

Both a Full Home Directory and the database.

If needs be, you can restore them both, from there, too.

As for your "previous theme", it WON'T work with v2.x.

No way.

The reason that I stressed backing-up the database is simple.

There's no way back to v1.1.11, once you've converted.

Unless you restore that backup. ;)

I'm currently running 1.1.11, and this is my site. I've been considering upgrading for some time, but there are a few things holding me back. The primary thing is that I'm reaaaally not savvy with SMF systems and whatnot. It tends to break rather easily when I'm using mods and whatnot, and I'm paranoid about breaking my forum. xD

So basically... I have a number of mods and that theme. I've read the directions, and while they seem a bit confusing, I think I could potentially pull it off. Maybe. For those who have done it, how would I deal with broken mods and all that? Do they transfer with it, or do I have to try to find a replacement or re-install each one?

Finally - would it be worth looking for someone to assist me with the upgrade? Basically if anything breaks I'd be completely lost, and I don't want to break it beyond repair. >.> Sure this is probably me just being overly worried, but when it comes to the coding and everything, the most I know is a bit of HTML and CSS, not nearly enough to work with this.

Thanks!

Don't do it- you will be sorry! I AM! My forum is dead, my database is dead, because I went to upgrade, hhit an error, and someone here told me to run "repair_settings.php" and it killed my database.  Be happy this piece of crap software works and don;t risk it - even if you back up, you may not be able to restore the database- I wasn't!

Yeah, the themes are totally different.

Not one css file but sixteen, or so.

It really is totally different to v1.1.11.

Don't forget, too, that v2. RC3 is NOT recommended for "live" sites.

On the download page, it quite clearly says "Note: As this is in development, we do not recommend running SMF 2.0 RC3 on a production site.".

In effect, it's a beta.

That said, a lot of people ARE using it and they really like it.

Me? I prefer v1.1.11, myself.
