Problems installing Anti-Spam Mods

Hi folks

not sure where to start ... so excuse me if this is in the wrong place!

We are being plagued by Spammers on our board, and I have just taken over as Chair of the Society, and there's no-one who seems to know how it all works who can help me!

I've tried to install some Mod packages to add things like a Clock and Calulations to the registration process, and while these work successfully, when you then try and register, it doesn't show any change to the registration page, but then denies you saying you've not done the clock or calculation ...

I've tried disabling the .htaccess stuff as a friend said that could interfere with things ... I've tried a variety of the Mods in the thought that maybe some were buggy but they are all the same.

Then I noticed that not all of the forum was at the current version, with CURRENT TEMPLATES showing a fair few still at 1.1:

I don't know if this might be the cause of why the Mods won't work - one of the templates which seems to be out of date is the Register one ...

But I can't see any way of bringing all those templates up to date?  How would I do that?

And is this the problem I have?  Is there anything else that I should be doing to try and get these antiSpam Mods installed?

Thanks for any help

David

are you using a custom theme? when it comes to mods, custom themes require editing in most cases.

I have no idea ... how would I find out if that was the case?

can you provide a link to your forum?
That might help :)

At the moment we're not processing any new registrations though as the Spammers are too many for us to be able to cope - 50 or so a day!

The current theme page says: Themis

Is that a standard one?  If not, how can I change it all to be using a standard one with which the Mods for Registration will work?

Thanks folks :)

Thanks.  I changed it to the Default theme, tried to apply the Captcha Clock Mod again, but the same position - nothing is seen on the registration page - no clock etc.

So seems that the theme isn't the issue here?

UPDATED: Looks like I did it wrong ... I changed the theme to be Default for the forum, but then the Registration page wouldn't load.  I got a message:

Template Parse Error!
It seems something has gone sour on the forum with the template system. This problem should only be temporary, so please come back later and try again. If you continue to see this message, please contact the administrator.

You can also try refreshing this page

Not sure what that means in practice?  Is the Template for Registration corrupted?

I uninstalled the Captcha Clock Mod, and the issue was still there ...

Any ideas?

you are best to get support for that mod in their support thread. when you did the uninstall was there any files that failed the check before you did the uninstall?

sawz

if you don't have any other registration mods installed, maybe upload a fresh Register.template.php. or manually go into the file and see if all that mods code has been removed.

How do I get hold of a fresh template?  Are they stored somewhere?

I can back up the old file and just FTP a new one in ...

And the install and deinstall of the Mod were both wholly successful as far as the on-screen reports are concerned.

you can get a fresh copy by downloading a new copy of smf from the links up top of the page.
