Just checking first I am doing it right

Downloaded the SMF-2.ORC4- upgrade   large file as a zip
didn't unpack it
wend into admin/download the upload section at the bottom, browsed to the  SMF-2.ORC4- upgrade on my computer and uploaded it.

Got the following:-

Package upload failed due to the following error:
"Although the package was downloaded to the server it appears to be empty. Please check the Packages directory, and the "temp" sub-directory are both writable. If you continue to experience this problem you should try example, if the package was called shout.tar.gz you should:
1) Download the packageextracting the package on your PC and uploading the extracted files into a subdirectory in your Packages directory and try again. For  to your local PC and extract it into files.
2) Using an FTP client create a new directory in your "Packages" folder, in this example you may call it "shout".
3) Upload all the files from the extracted package to this directory.
4) Go back to the package manager browse page and the package will be automatically found by SMF."

If I did it right first question is what is the Packages directory, and the "temp" sub-directory? and what code should they have to be writable? Is this the directory the forum sits in on my server?

i think im right in this as ive only just done mine you have to upload it direct to your host server and unzip it there, you cant do it through the admin ctrl  panel in smf

Illori

correct you cant do the upgrade to 2.anything though the package manager you must do it via ftp

How do I use FTP? / What is FTP?

then running the upgrade.php script

Thanks for that some progress there.

I am OK with FTP so do I transfer the zip file or unpack it and transfer the files and what directory do they go in?

Also how do I run the upgrade script?

Probably a corrupt package. Do as Illori stated.

You run the upgrade script by typing your forum's url, but instead of typing index.php you type upgrade.php.

That's at least an honest answer. This problem persists for more than two years and nobody is paying attention to it.

I'm about to upgrade in a few days as well. I haven't really been into the forum stuff lately as I've just been letting my site grow as is. I have some questions;

Does the upgrade to RC4 change customizations that I've already made to my forum layout?

Does the upgrade uninstall my mods?

Is the upgrade worth it?

Considering it's a deliberate design decision to not issue package manager updates for pre-release versions and has been for years, it's not surprising nothing's changed.

QuoteDoes the upgrade to RC4 change customizations that I've already made to my forum layout?

It replaces the default theme. Other customisations may or make not work properly due to changes in styles.

QuoteDoes the upgrade uninstall my mods?

It removes the edits made. You are still recommended to uninstall them so the database is consistent (since otherwise it'll think you have them all still installed)
Holder of controversial views, all of which my own.
