I would suggest you check out the available portals here which will allow you to add blocks and sidebars to your forum. Alternatively look in this list of Advertising Mods which will enable you to place adverts in and around your forum.

Either of which are much easier to use than hacking the forum code. No point in reinventing the wheel eh?
