I am preparing to convert from phpbb to SMF.  I already have an SMF board at a new website of mine.  I have made changes to the classic theme, such as banners, etc.

When upgrades for SMF become available, can this create any problems?

Thank you.

Though the theme will still work, some new features may not. It's always a good idea to look at the template files of a new version to see what's changed (or just edit the new ones).

Just backup your default and classic theme.
Note some settings from default affecting classic theme too(at least in early releases).

You only have to update the upgraded theme now with your css additions and the index.template additions.

But actually its not to much work to update the index.template (eg.removing/changing logo name).
If you made big changes those are normally css related.
If you have new images just replace them from your backup once.

Sometimes you nee dto modify the board.index or diffrent scripts from the default theme along with some image linkage, again this was nessassary in early releases.

GOod luck and just backup each file before you start the altering ;-)

The easiest way to upgrade themes is to do a "three way" file comparison.

First, you get a file comparison tool or editor with such a tool.  A good example is ConTEXT.

Then, you get the original classic theme, and the new classic theme - neither of these has your modifications.  By comparing them, you will see the changes made to the classic theme from the version yours is based on.  Make these same changes to your theme, each step of the way.  In many cases, the lines you changed will be the same still, and if they're not you can post here for help.
