Is there anyway to add additional fields to be filled in when a member is registering?

the default feature in 2.0 advanced profile fields allows you add fields to the registration page.

Using V2 yes, but you need to turn it on in Configuration >> Core Features first.
Then it will appear under Configuration >> Features and options

If using V1 there are mods to do it.

Yes there´s goto Management->Configuration->Basic Features->Custom Profile Fields.
This feature allows you to hide default profile fields, profile fields to the registration process and to add new profile fields for your board to make.
