Server setup

I've spent some time now trying to get my forum running optimally. Enom are my hosts on a shared Linux/Apache server, and I've had nothing but trouble with them. I know I should move and indeed I've cancelled auto renewal. In the meantime I've discovered that running php as FastCgi instead of the default Apache module speeds things up ... but I am unable to upload a pdf as an attachment when running as FastCgi. I get a server misconfig message if I try. (I disabled htaccess in attachments, no help) It will work running php with Apache selected but other things don't work then and everything slows down. For instance, I get a blank screen if I try to access caching or load balancing (I don't have access to sever logs.)

eAccelerator shows up enabled on the server in phpinfo but SMF does not detect it! Does that mean it's not compiled right. I'm lost when talking to these guys, the help desk at Enom is anything but ... defensive is the kindest way of describing them.

I'm asking here cause I know where the brains are :D

BTW I've read the threads on overselling and this has made me reconsider my options.

It means the newer versions are no longer supported as they removed the caching features from it as of 0.96. Even older versions were difficult to manage as the caching functions had to be enabled when building.
