Migration advice from 1.1.11 to 2.0.2

I've read quite a bit about the migration process and on my test SMF forums, its working no problem.

However, I have an issue with the Live forums we have due to the fact that it was originally built using 1&1's 'Click and Build' service.

More details are in this thread:  http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=469730.0

Basically, our FTP login ID doesn't have authority to make changes to the files their 'Click & Build' service laid down.  I can't edit them, therefore, can't install update packages etc.  (So...we're stuck at 1.1.11 forever unless I do something.)

The only way I think I can work around it to manually bring everything off the server, export (backup) the MySQL DB, then delete the dir's & files on the server and lay down the same file structure using my ID so that it has ownership over the SMF file structure at 1.1.11.

I can then go ahead and run through the Large upgrade to get us to 2.0.2.

I'm looking for advice on if that's a realistic plan?

I read through your other topic and I'm a bit confused.  That's not unusual depending on who you ask! ;P

So did you install a fresh 1.1.16 forum?

Are you now planning on backing up your 1.1.11 forum, the database and forum files, then deleting everything off the server?  Once that is complete you plan to FTP the backup files back to the server manually so that your FTP user retains ownership of the files so that you will be able to change permissions?  Ultimately you want to be able to upgrade to 2.0.2?

I'm thinking it's pretty crappy that 1&1 wouldn't do all this for you in order to keep your business.  Are you moving to a new host?

Honestly, its not 'my' forum.  I'm a PeopleSoft Sys Admin/DBA so I'm as close as it comes to tech support.  (Plus, I'm cheap...)  I do have all the access I need to do the migration however.   Who hosts the site isn't up to me...if it was, I'd probably move it as well.

I think its ridiculous for 1&1 support as well, a simple CHMOD would fix this issue in about 30 secs.

My plan is as you say, offload everything, ftp it back up so our FTP account owns it and then immediately, yes migrate it to 2.0.2.  I'm testing that scenario right now actually.  I've ftp'd it back up to a new directory, upgraded it to 1.1.16, and I'm now running the large upgrade script to get it over to 2.0.2.

I just wanted someone who's done this before to confirm that the correct process.

Am I on the right track?

you dont need to upgrade to 1.1.16 first before the 2.0.2 upgrade. you just need to follow Upgrading SMF

you might also need What is repair_settings.php? for your test install
