i read the articles about how to do it and was unclear when it said to download the files in the directory. do I have to download them all, every single file and folder or just certain html files???

ziycon

You need to download everything in the directory where your forum exists, for example your forum url is say http://www.mysite.com/smf/, you would log into your hosting via FTP or a file manager application from your cpanel and navigate to the directory called SMF and download everything inside it.

How do I move my SMF forum to a different host?

MrPhil

There are no HTML files in SMF. Its source is PHP files (the "scripts" to create the displayed pages). There are CSS files to control formatting, GIF/JPEG/PNG files for images, and some miscellaneous files used during installation.

Since you obviously have no idea what you're getting into, I suggest that you hire someone to do the job for you (or at least, stand by your side and show you what to do). That will save a lot of time and agony.

i know there are no html files or did not think there were, but i was relaying what i read in an article on this site. Your second sentence had no relevancy to this discussion Phil, so keep the assumptions out for your wrong and that's all I need to say as you provided no evidence to support your claim of me having no idea what I am doing. This ziycon, I thank you for the help, but Phil, i say this...your wrong for you provided no evidence when saying i have no idea what i am doing. if you had any idea of me or my situation you would no better than to suggest that to me, so learn to ask when you do not know or butt out
