You can set the time that users have been active, in Admin > Configuration > General and set "User online time threshold" to 1440. That will show (in the user online list) who's been active for the past 24 hours.

Is that what you meant? It would certainly do the job I reckon

It would also slow your forum down considerably for all online users.
