I am planning to ask our host to install ngix. Is this a good option for a high-traffic SMF forum? If ngix is installed, will it replace Apache server? What are the advantages and disadvantages of ngix?

Yes, it most certainly is.
It doesn't have to replace Apache, but you *can* make it replace Apache... :)
Up to the implementation type.

nginx was installed as a plug-in in cpanel. is this good enough?

Whether it is a plug-in or not makes absolutely no difference at all other than the way it's managed.
What matters is the configuration itself, not the place where you configure it from. :)
Now it will probably be easier to manage as a plugin, but it still doesn't say a single bit about your configuration on it's own.
