At one point I was stopping it, I have to download the security patch, what should I do next?

Hello,

Security patches are not really anti-spam solutions you still have to build some custom questions / captcha modules.

Please use proper modification for your version : http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?action=search;type=19

This one has been doing wonders, zero spam \ fake members here for years.

Choose some good questions, maybe related to forum content. Change them now and then (if ever needed).

& eventually, if you want to be in complete control, use Member Approval to manually check every registration, checking any name or ip you may find suspect.

If you have 1.1.17 already installed, that's the latest available (in the 1.1 branch). Is that the "security patch" you're trying to download?

I don't understand "fake bots emails". Are you saying that spambots are trying to register on your forum? If so, follow the advice given above (and in many, many, too many other places on this forum) to add various features (mods) to make it difficult for spammers to sign up. If you already have many spammers signed up as members, and they're spewing out spam emails/personal messages to your members, you'll just have to either shut down the ability to email/PM, or go through and ban the offending spambot members. If you're receiving spam to your site email accounts from outside of your forum, we can't help you with that. You'll have to talk to your host about email filters such as SpamAssassin. In any case, you'll have to be clearer about what the problem is.

Just installed this. Great stuff. I always used to have problems with spammers if I turned registrations on.
I've found it....it was where I left it !
