same problem as eldublu
today it happened no box appears on replying or starting a new topic, them is default with just colours changed
its my friends forum he was still on 1.1.11 i upgraded him to latest package and still the same

kat

If you upgraded to v2.0.3, the theme's not compatible.

If you're using v1.1.17, what happens if you use the default theme?

That custom theme might not be compatible with v1.1.17...

typan4

Well I haven't updated anything, I wasn't even on line when the problem started.
I've found it....it was where I left it !

yodaofborg

its 1.1.17 he was on 1.1.11 and the same problem happened
that is the default smf theme
i have just changed the colours of the images and the background colours, other than that there is no editing to the code whatsoever
and as i upgraded each step 1.1.11 to 1.1.12 i checked and the same problem existed and so on all the way to 1.1.17

Not in a million years is that the SMF default theme. That's kinda white/silver/blue/grey and that one's red and gold.

typan4

I'm on default anyway, so that doesn't seem to be the issue.

As I said, elsewhere, it'll be best if you start your own topic. Otherwise this is gonna get terribly confusing.

yodaofborg

i am emailing the hosting company now to ask what you recommended

Has your host upgraded a server, perhaps?

If they have, they may have enabled "mod_security", or even taken full CHOWN ownership of your files, from you. It might be worth checking, with them, to find out.

the layout is totally default, as i have said i have only changed the background colours and edited the images to match that's it

there has been no modding to the code as regard actions or layouts or anything else just colour changes and icon edits other than that its totally default i edited these files in the default theme folder a few years ago now and its all benn good till 3pm today when it was still running 1.1.11 and i upgraded it to 1.1.17 via the package installe and checked the posting problem on each upgrade incriment till it got to 1.1.17
hope this makes sense when i say i am using the default theme

yodaofborg

it turns out that both Typan4 and myself are with the same hosting company
ukhost4u we have both sent questions asking

hiya K@
does this make any sense to you if so do you know what we need to modify?
or are we better off just moving to the other server
and if we do modify the code, would new release just overwrite it each time?
many thanks for your help

'Dear Customer,

We are constantly reviewing the security measures in place on our servers and on the 25/01/2013 had to block the use of the ini_set() PHP function when called via the PHP eval() function. Note that calling ini_set() is still allowed.

The reason for this change is that it prevents many malicious shell scripts from running. We are aware that it has also stopped some genuine PHP scripts from operating as normal and if you are affected there are 2 options.

Firstly, it may be easier to modidy your PHP script so that it calls ini_set() directly (instead of via eval()) or that it doesn't call ini_set() at all.
However, that may not be a good solution for all so we can move your account to our other server which runs more relaxed security and doesn't have this function disabled.

If you would like us to move your account to that server please let us know.'.

Arantor

On an unmodified SMF install, both ini_set and eval() are called but I cannot find a single instance where ini_set would be called from within eval().

Makes me wonder how competent the host really is.

Yes, you could move it to the other server and that would fix it in the short term at least.

yodaofborg

could a package cause this then instead
these are the packages he has installed on the forum
see image

Arantor

I don't know the code of every single mod off hand.

It might help if you could upload your Themes/default/Post.template.php though.

Arantor

I can't see any reason why that's failing. There's no ini_set calls in it. Your host's security is paranoid - and by the looks of it, wrong.
