How do I change the code for my forum?

I don't know how to change the code. Do I need to use some special editor or something? How do I get into the code to change it? Through the forum itself?

If you don't know what you're doing, then you shouldn't be touching code.

If you even have to ask about the editor, careful what you do 
But we all have to start somewhere, sometime. http://notepad-plus-plus.org/ will do the job.
As for the files, use FTP. And do some ! backups ! if you really want to start experimenting.

Ha, thanks for the vote of confidence guys. I just want to make a few small changes, and as the forum administrator, it'd be good to start learning this stuff. I thought I'd start with some simple stuff like adding a meta title or something...and see how that goes. Problem is, there are lots of little things that need changing and I don't have the budget to pay for it. So can you help?

the system already handles many meta tags, including title, IIRC

If it doesn't the Optimus Brave mod does....

Starting out and trying things is good.
but you need to be clear exactly what you think needs to be modified.
95% of tghe time, I am betting that anything you want to change can eithe rbe done in the existing system or done with a mod interface without you messing with direct code edits.
