Ignore after a given number of replies

Everyone at some time or another is asked by their forum subscribers how they can ignore certain topics that they have replied too.  That's an old and well traveled topic.  But how about this...

I notice that Facebook stops notifying you after five replies following your last participation.  Obviously Facebook is a completely different animal.  But the concept causes me to consider SMF.  Any modification, or possible modification for SMF to produce the same results; stop placing a given topic under Unread Replies after a given number of followup posts?

Knowing what I know about PHP and SQL, this sounds like a complicated and burdensome modification.  But my expertise on how SMF is structured only goes so far, so I thought I'd ask.

Thanks.

I don't know how to articulate this succinctly enough to effectively search for it.  I've tried and come up with only the old Ignore Topics stuff.  So if this specific premise has been discussed, I'll just have to beg forgiveness.

To save any confusion, with SMF notifications is different from something appearing under "Unread replies". Is it notifications you want to stop? Or do you want things to vanish from "Unread replies" (The thing you see, when you click on the link to the right of your avatar, at the top of the page)?

It confused me, so I thought it worth asking. ;)

The items under Unread Replies is what I'm referring to.

My bad for the ambiguity.  Apologies.

Thanks, for that.

My feeling (Which way be WAY wrong) is that you're gonna get a big performance hit, with this. But, I'll be happy if someone comes-in and proves me wrong. :)
