You need to get one of these two versions of the Tapatalk mod built specifically for SMF (depends on which version of SMF platform you are using at your site), they are located at the following link...

https://tapatalk.com/activate_tapatalk.php?plugin=smf

Then just install using the normal SMF package manager

And gods help you...   I have heard and seen lots of people have major issues with their site and with other mods once they install tapatalk

Honestly, you expect your users to pay for an application that only half works?

I have tried to do as you indicate several times with no results.  Each time it shows that the mod has not installed but yet it shows that it downloaded properly complete with a list of files.  But when I move over to the installed tab it shows that it did not install.  It does say it is located on the server but I cannot go any further from there.  Just not sure what I am doing properly.  I do not see the proper file under the root as it should be.  Not sure where to go from here.  Thanks for any assistance.

Interesting you should make god plural, but I may have to agree with ya on this one, have tried that mod several times and always tricky getting anything overly beneficial...

Well, if it fails the install, it won't show up on the 'installed' tab, will it...?

Will it?

I've been using tapatalk for 2 years now and its worked fine- btw there's a free version out there which is great also.
I would try removing all tapatalk installations through my hosts cpanel or file manager- some of them are installed as mobique. Once they are all gone try a fresh install. Make sure you get the latest  zip package straight from tapatalk.com also make sure you're site is registered with them.
