So I guess I am going to have to quit trying to learn this on my own because I keep messing things up. I was trying to follow directions on how to add an RSS feed to a certain part of my SMF. After changing the URL, now when I click on the board where my posters are, it sends me to a RSS looking white screen. The bad part is that I cannot get into my admin panel, to change my settings back or anything. Any ideas?

Illori

what exactly have you used to do what you have done? by default smf does not use an rss feed to display anything in a board.

All I did was enable the .xml/rss feed in the admin settings. Then I changed the URL from my website which was hxxp:www.nascarwagers.com/forums [nonactive] (which was the previous address) and added hxxp:www.nascarwagers.com/forums/index.php?type=rss;action=.xml [nonactive] as my new URL following some instructions online.

Well now when I click on anything outside of my home landing page, it goes to a white screen with the following message at the top:

"This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below."

I changed the URL back to what is was before as soon as it happened but I don't think it saved, because once I clicked save it sent me to the screen mentioned above. Now I cannot get into the admin panel to change the settings back of the URL, which I guess would correct the issue?

What "URL for your website" did you change *exactly*?

http://www.nascarwagers.com/forums/

seems to work just fine for me...

However, it looks like you tried to set up your BOARD as an XML... that is
1- not a smart move
2- not suggested

What SPECIFIC instructions did you follow to do that?
(because if someone is distributing instructions like that, we need to tell everyone that is a BAD idea and those should be ignored.)

http://nascarwagers.com/forums/index..php?board=1.0
should get you to the board, despite your bad configuration... except that directs to some other, non forums site... which suggests that you have some sort of htaccess redirect or other such silliness like wordpress set up.

Yes it looks like it works just find, it will take you to the correct forums home screen. However if you click on any button or the discussion board it takes you to the screen I mentioned above. Therefore I have no access to the admin panel, settings, cannot read boards, post, etc.

I do have a link on my website that directs to the forums and one from the forums that redirects which has been there since I setup the forum. I guess I am going to have to try restore it from a previous date.

I will try to find the forum article with the instructions I was following for reference Kindred

You have missed the point...

I don't care about the button that you added to point back to your main domain Wordpress site....  That is not relevant...   Except that Wordpress scores with all subdirectories...  As evidenced by the fact that, when I tried to access board=1.0 directly, it bounced back to the Wordpress installation.

The login and register buttons seem to work correctly...   So, can you provide a login account so I can see the error with the other menu items?

Also, why would you even WANT to redirect your board to an RSS feed? That seems like a poor plan to start with, even aside from the misconfiguration...

Sorry Kindred I am extremely confused. Sent you a PM trying to clarify the situation, thanks for your responses and attempt to help thus far.

Seems you might be getting lost in misinterpretation of terminology regarding RSS... the purpose of that admin setting for XML/RSS enable is so that you have the ability to access your posts AS an rss feed in and of itself... where users and guests are able get new posts automatically downloaded as they occur... VS. having an outside site's RSS feed being imported into your site, which is also possible to accomplish but requires a third party module...

Kindred

he did as Arantor and I expected...   he changed his actual FORUM URL to be the rss address....

I'm surprised that ANY of it works, at all, to tell the truth.

It's more of a fluke about how SMF's URL processing combined with browser handling works at that point.

I'm still trying to understand why the base forum URL was changed.

He still has not sent me a link to the instructions that he used. However it would seem that there is a set of instructions are out there somewhere which tells people to do what he did or possibly he misunderstood instructions and applied it in the base your own instead of in the suburbs where it's supposed to go for board URL or board redirect
