View replies as a permission

I run a private forum for my family and friends.  I have a wishlist board where people post things that they would like to get for Christmas/birthdays/whatever.  It would be useful to me if I could set the permissions so that you could read and post replies to any topic except the one you created.  That way we could discuss what is already purchased on the list.
If there is an easy way to do this that I have missed, please clue me in.  I thought that a view replies: own posts, all posts type of thing could be modified to do this but there is no view replies permission.

You'd have to modify it to create that permission.
