email regaring approval not arriving

recently updated to 2.0.9
ran into a couple registration issues( that i created in spam questions) that were fixed but in the process registered as a new member several times.
Forum is set so that admin must approve membership.
When i register as a new member, the email i use for that account receives the welcome email but indicates that the account must be approved and that another email will be sent once it is approved.
I then log out of the "new" account and log in as admin, and approve the new test account.
The new account(s) email have not yet received the email indicating that the account was approved.
does this take a while to be sent, should be immediate i would think.
(nothing is spam folder)
any thoughts?
