I never told you that you had to chmod to 777.

none of my sites are currently at 777 -  but they never ask for the ftp info because the php user can edit files because the files are properly chown set for the access rights of the web user and php (which are sometimes/often two different things)

if you have an unused theme installed with incorrect paths, package manager will choke with the readable files/folders error, even if the theme is not selected for mod install.

Did you check this?

you can ignore the advice given, but i know if you put in the full path for your boarddir it will fix your issue, otherwise you can sit around and try to dig in the code and find a fix for your issue which may just make it worse.

I thank you all for your kind support. My issue hasn't been resolved though, so I think I will -or- debug the issue myself, -or- move to another board. (thinking a bit more, I will probably right a small script that goes through all possible variations of boarddir & ftp_root to see which one results in the right one).

If the solution to my problem is opening up my server to anyone (world +rw), in my opinion it is bad advice (and/or not a very secure board). In which case I rightfully feel this advice should be ignored.

Thanks again!

Since we have never had a report of issues like you are having  it is fairly clear that the problem is in YOUR configuration, not in our code...   so, changing our code to try to match your misconfiguration is the wrong path to take.
