Count child's posts in parent's totals was enabled, I've disabled it.

Everything takes a while, getting 2 min page loads to Home.  You can see it here.

just tried again and after 01:31.03 page still hadn't loaded....

I would look at all indexes on the messages, members & boards tables.

Compare the indexes to a board that is working fine.

Maybe some (all?) indexes weren't rebuilt during the restore.

Also look at log_boards & topics.

Will check.  If that were the case, wouldn't it not load at all?  I'll see if I can get a copy of a db dump prior to the move.  All I have is the current db.  Not logging any forum or db errors, host support sees nothing on their end.

No, actually that's a very good point - indexes are mainly there to speed up operations, and make things easier for the DB engine, but most everything can be done without indexes as well. Just slower.

Yep. It's behaving exactly as it would if there were no indexes...

I'm beat, will get back to this tomorrow.  Thanks for the input.

Just a quick look, there are 12 indexes in smf_messages on working forum, only four on borked db.

it looks to me like there are possibly some missing or corrupted threads/posts which cause the boards with more content to choke

Please do not PM, IM or Email me with support questions.  You will get better and faster responses in the support boards.  Thank you.

When I first tested board index, it took over 180 seconds. And a random board with just a few topics took over a minute as well. It isn't very consistent.

Off to a bad start.  Won't let me add PRIMARY index.

This looks like a woefully failed restore.  My first guess is that the data went in 2x, so the indexes could not be built.

First, I would look to see if the dupes are dupes...  E.g., if the two records with a key of 403073 are the same.  If so, there may be a hope to repair it.

It would also be very helpful to see if there are two copies of 403073 in the backup.  I.e., was the failure at backup time or at restore time...

If the backup is good, I'd be tempted to redo the restore; the question is how much data is lost.

I am so sorry for putting you all through this. I have been battling this for an entire month and thought maybe I had done something wrong.I just now installed one of our other forums, a little one that seems to have been backed up but the mods were some still active while others were unnstalled.
It appears to be behaving with the files/db which this one has not. Weird.

Just getting back to this.  Was unable to import the db to my server, it's too large, but had host do it.  They didn't report any problems with the import.  I have a backup from 30 Nov, that apparently is earliest available, and coincides with most recent posts on prod forum, but it's quite a bit smaller than current prod db.  The db I'm using is damaged, but pages do load after 2-4 minutes, and board index looks clean.  Forum is way to slow to click around looking for problems.

Not wierd at all, did a clean 2.0.17 install with new db (/public_html/forum/) and it ran fine until I imported prod db.  The problem is in the database.

Looks like you're right.  30 Nov database is good, smf8_messages contains 343830 rows, agrees with recounted stats.  Pages load normally.  Recent posts all dated 30 Nov, same as prod forum.   Bad dump is 118.4 mb, good one is 83.6 mb, both gzipped.  Import to new server must have duped messages.  Just have to determine if anything's lost by using this db, but don't think there's been any activity on forum since 30 Nov.

I have those in a saved doc to readd to the table.

I wouldn't, just let them go.  Upload clean files (again!), drop all tables in the production database, import the 30 Nov backup, run repair_settings, make sure table prefix is smf8_, remove hooks.  Check everything, then reinstall your theme and mods.  You may still have the attachments problem posted in your other topic, but let's not worry about that until forum is back on its feet and running correctly.
